TIPTOE
Focus: TIPTOE is a project designed to help people over the age of 65 living with joint pain and other conditions.
Timeline: 2023 – 2026
Funder: NIHR HTA (£1,727,707)
Collaborators: TIPTOE is led by Cardiff University, collaborating with other organisations including Bridges Self-Management and City St George’s, University of London.
TIPTOE will test an intervention which has integrated the core principles of Bridges Self-Management, contextualised to people living with joint pain.
We first involved people with joint pain in co-designing a new handbook called ‘Living well with joint pain’, which involves real life stories, experiences and strategies used by people, all who have different experiences of joint pain.
As with some of our other projects, healthcare practitioners were specially trained by the Bridges team to deliver intervention sessions based on Bridges principles and utilising the experiences of those that co-designed the “Living well with joint pain” book. These sessions aim to help support people randomised to the TIPTOE intervention to be more active, confident and knowledgeable about their joint pain. More than 800 people are being recruited from across England and Wales. The study will help understand how best to support people to manage life with a joint pain, and evaluate the effect on activity levels, quality of life and how pain affects day to day activities.

Living well with joint pain: book participants
I want our stories to be positive, to give people hope. I want people to think it’s not too late for them to try something new. I want people to not be afraid of movement and to have a positive mindset when it comes to their condition – that’s my main focus.Sarah
I’ve come to the conclusion that what works for one person doesn’t work for another, but if you try different things, you can find out what works for you.Ivy
I’m really happy that people like me can share our experience of joint pain to help others.Ishvar
