Research Projects

Bridges is informed by a 15-year programme of research. Our research has shown it is possible for people to be supported to self-manage through the use of personalised language and strategies by healthcare staff, and through resources such as our handbooks, all co-designed with people living with a long-term condition.

A ‘Bridges way of working’ that personalises self-management support and is integrated across healthcare interactions can help people feel less alone and more confident when living with and managing their condition.

In turn, Bridges has an impact on people’s emotional wellbeing and quality of life when living with a long-term condition, and on practitioners’ wellbeing, productivity and job satisfaction when working in this way. Practitioners report feeling more connected to their job purpose and a greater feeling of achievement and satisfaction.

Bridges as an approach to supporting self-management has now been adapted and evaluated through research in multiple different areas of healthcare. Take a look below to find out more about some of these areas.
